Select brings up the status menu. * SCREEN * The screen is pretty self-explanatory. . .the red hearts are your life bar (every hit, regardless of from whom) removes half a heart. The blue orbs are your MP. . .of the spells that I found, each one cost 2 orbs to cast. * SHOPS * There are shops peppered throughout the lands. Each shop can only be entered once. Once you leave, you cannot re-enter it. To buy an item, you press the pad in the direction of the item (left for A, up for B, right for C), hold, and press I. To leave without purchasing anything, press Up and hold, then press I. Doing this will not permit you back in the shop. Also, you can only buy one item per shop. * WEAPONRY * When you start out, your weapon sucks. You can upgrade it through one of three ways: Buying a stronger weapon; Being given a stronger weapon by a townsfolk; or finding a stronger weapon in a chest. The status screen shows what your current weapon is, and what is next in queue. There is no way (that I found) to change the queue. This means that if your 3-way shot runs out, and bombs are next, you need to use up all the bombs before the next weapon (if any) is used. If no more weapon power-ups are available, you go back to the puny little shot from the game start. * MAGIC * According to the manual, there are 6 spells (I think). I only found three of them. I don't think that any spells are available for purchase in the shops. All of them need to be found. Through the game, there are walls that can be shot at. In some of these areas you will find an old woman, she is the one who will give you the spells (for instance, in the lava area, there is an area of platforms, a small non-platform area, followed by another platform area -- the the non-platform area, shoot north, and an opening will reveal itself, and this will get you the BIG spell). To cast a spell, hold the II button until Valkyrie flashes, a cartoon box above here head will show the current spell, use the direction key [left and right] to change this spell; release the button to cast. To cancel a spell, have Valkyrie select the empty cartoon box. * AREAS * The first areas are pretty easy. .. The Ice area. This is a good place to rack up "weapons." When you first enter this area, you'll encounter a priestess. Later on you will encounter another one who will ask you a question. Responding with A or C will return you back to the beginning of the level (minus your magic spells and MP, don't worry, answering B will get them back), however, your Gold remains the same as it was at the start of the level, but any weapons that you've found or bough stay with you. So, the thing to do is to buy a weapon at the shop, get the one from the chest, answer "A" and repeat until your weapon bar is full. then answer "B" -- you will get all of your spells back, and this gave me enough weaponry to get to the end of the game (when coupled with the few other ones that I found). The boss of this area is a big eagle. I exclusively used the BIG spell (with the big spell, everytime you jump, you Hit your opponents), with button I on turbo. When you jump, the bombs will change to either gold or orbs -- collect the orbs as they replenish your MP (and collect the gold if you can!). Last Stage. At the start of this stage, you will be "frozen," and again lose all your magic. In the town to the north, there is a pond of dark yellow hue. Jump in the pond, and your Magic will return to you. You need to "revive" yourself in this way, else the gate (north of here) will not open for you. Beyond the gate, there are a few houses (also, a few chests in the lower right hand corner, as well). The north most house will lead you to a long Icy corridor. At the end of the hallway is a lion, he will ask you a question, the responses are as follows: A: lets you play a "Galaga bonus stage sort of shooter" B: returns you to the start of the level (?) C: makes you play a mixed up puzzle game (3 of them). answering A or C is the way out, I got 39 of 40 on "A," my guess would be that you get a new spell if you get 40 of 40. I attempted the puzzles once, and failed miserably (1 out of 3). This takes you to the last area. Be well armed here, since there are scads of beasts and you'll go through weapons quicker than someone with diarhea goes through toilet paper. On the last large island before the end boss, there are chests on every corner. To get them, use this pattern: 1. SE 2. SW 3. NE 4. NW After you exit this island to the north, you're ready to battle the final boss. The final boss: part 1: The 4-way shot is best here, just keep blasting away, and trying to avoid the witches shots. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Parts 2 and 3: these are both similar, the bombs work remarkable well on this boss, since you can lob them, and they explode over a fairly wide area. I saved my magic for the third part (then I used the BIG spell and just jumped around, this took care of well over half his HP). to shoot the boss with anything other than bombs and the smart shot, you need to shot directly north, or directly south of him. North of him is easier, but watch out for his Loooong arms. The best offense is to run around the islands in a circular fashion, shooting at him while at the top, then when he gets too close, moving to the bottom, wait until he gets close, then to the top (etc). The third boss is quicker than the second, so this offense takes a while with him since you can only get in a few shots before you have to move (hence, the magic is better for him). lame ending, but you can say you did it. =) -bt
