@> From: Guirreri @> Subject: IRC.INFO You and a friend can now chat interactively about your most beloved subject - the Turbo Grafix, Duo, and PC-Engine!!! i have started two channels (#TurboList and #TurboHack) on the DALnet IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server for this list to chat on. For now the channels are not moderated, but i'd like to start a schedule some day of frequent topics to talk about. But first, you need to get on and see what it's like. follow these simple instructions: 1. Retrieve an IRC client program (keeping in mind that your internet service provider has an IRC server!): mIRC cleint (the best client available - fully-functioning Shareware - Windows 3.1, NT, 95): http://www-2.nijenrode.nl/software/mirc/index.html Pirch client (a client that is said to be easier to use, but is rather new - Shareware - Windows 3.1, NT, 95): http://www.bcpl.lib.md.us/~frappa/pirch.html Although IRC is mainly for Windows users, there are some for Macintosh and other operating systems. I haven't used any of them, so i don't know how they compare: Ircle (Shareware - Macintosh) http://www.ircle.com/ ...and i believe there's others, but i've heard Ircle is one of the best anyway... 2. Once properly installed and configured, connect to the DALnet server: I use the client called mIRC, which has the servers configured simply. You merely double-click on the one you wish to connect to. However if you must connect manually (with the /connect command), once connected type: /server then one of the following DALnet server names all of which will get you where you need to go: stlouis.mo.us.dal.net glass.oh.us.dal.net toast.ne.us.dal.net igc.dal.net (USA) phoenix.dal.net (USA) groucho.dal.net (USA) toronto.dal.net (Canada) liberator.dal.net (UK) datashopper.dal.net (Denmark) xgw.dal.net (Finland) megasoft.wa.us.dal.net skypoint.mn.us.dal.net uncc.nc.us.dal.net dragon.ut.us.dal.net ...or simply irc.dal.net (DALnet USA)...and there are MANY others If you have the option, hook to port 7000 if you can...6667 if not - at least that is what i was recommended. 3. Choose a nickname: Everyone has a nickname on IRC. Mine is MIDIdude. This is simple to get, just type: /nick nickname ..."nickname" being your nickname. You can use anything you want. However if someone else has registered your nickname or has it already, you will need to pick another. To make sure that no one else gets your new and unique nick, you can REGISTER it on the server. If you need help with this, just contact me. 4. Join a channel: There are many channels on irc, hundreds to thousands even, each as if it were a room with its own discussions, some good some bad. To see all of them (it will take some time), type: /list to join a channel, type: /join #channelname You will then join the channel and be greeted or disliked by those there. The channels i have created and registered on DALnet are called TurboList and TurboHack, so for instance you would type: /join #TurboList or /join #TurboHack Notice that the "#" is needed to preceed a channel. IRC is fun and if used right can be very productive. You can talk instantly with others for immediate satisfaction. And, there are hundreds of commands to mess around with and customize. Questions about any of the above or anything more specific (especially about mIRC) can be sent to me, Chris (MIDIdude), at guirreri@the-hermes.net I will normally be at the channels over weekends and at late-nights (eastern time). Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 pm Eastern is now the official meeting times. Sometimes i am there 'till very late, so feel free to come by anytime, especially if you're not stateside. Enjoy, happy gaming, and see you there! DON'T FORGET!! - meetings every Sat. and Sun. on DALnet IRC in channels #TurboList and #TurboHack at 8:00 eastern!!
